  Kyros' Fireball

Since my previews up to now have all been green, I thought I should show off a different colour. This also shows off the only keyword in my set, Chaos! As befits the word, many of its incarnations are on red cards, but there's a few sprinkled in other colours too. The gist of Chaos is that an opponent gets to choose some crucial aspect of the spell's effects.

In this case, this is a standard sort of red direct damage/removal effect, with the twist that you have to specify multiple targets and an opponent gets to choose which of those targets are most affected. This makes it somewhat less powerful than a spell that did the same thing but allowed the caster to specify all the targeting details, so the casting cost is a bit cheaper than you'd expect for a spell that can kill 3 creatures and/or direct damage the opponent.

I'm also fascinated by the mechanic of choosing multiple targets for effects. It's good in that you affect multiple things, but bad in that sometimes there aren't enough targets for you to actually use the effect. And even if there are, there might not be enough that you want to affect. So in this case, you might end up targeting yourself, or one of your own creatures, and take some losses on your own side in order to damage the opponent or his creatures. Considering this led naturally to the idea of Chaos as a mechanic, as it makes that choice to sacrifice something even harder.

One small rule clarification: you can target any combination of creatures and/or players, not just "3 creatures" or "3 players". I'm not sure if it's worth wording that explicitly, or if it's obvious.

And for those who don't know Kyros:

David Karlov has a neat expansion symbol, and has found a great artist for a card with a very useful effect.

Nawheera is a faerie queen who can give up a little bit of her life essence to regenerate another creature (or herself). She essentially gives four regeneration effects for G (not even requiring her to tap, although she must be untapped), and a fifth at the cost of her existence.

Nawheera can be brought into play relatively early, and could have a big influence on the game's momentum if left unchecked. An opponent who has an effect which can cause her to be buried, sacrificed, or removed from the game, will probably use it quickly. Tap effects can disable her in the short-term.

Linda Bergkvist will probably end up as the artist having the highest number of works featured in my cards.

David McLeish has gotten into the act and put monkeys in the draft.

There is a five-colour cycle of Monkeys. This is one of them. You may infer or assume whatever else you please about it. :)

This is one set of cards where I consciously made the cost cheap enough that this would be broken if it was actually a legal Constructed card. 3 mana for a 2/2 creature with an effect is based on the Zubera cycle, but this is more like a 2/2/ creature with four effects. If you actually went to the effort of creating a Monkey deck with this cycle, it would be uber-powerful - especially if you used colour-replacement effects (Laces, Sleight of Mind, Alter Reality et al) as well. However, it seems fair to make it cheaper in this format, when there will only be a handful of Monkeys swinging around.

Andrew Coker has invented a keyword called Focus, which all of his creatures have.

Here's some more info about the "Focus" keyword:

  1. The cards are face-down to keep them secret from your opponent. You may look at focus cards on your own creatures any time you want - just like you can look at your own Morph creatures.
  2. Putting focus cards "on" a creature is not the same as attaching an Aura or Enchantment. The focus cards are not actually in play. Protection does not prevent a card having focus cards on it. When creatures refer to cards that are "on" them, it does not include Auras or Equipment - only focus cards.
  3. Focus cards are considered "removed from the game". If a creature's ability asks you to remove a focus card from the game, then you have formally severed the link that ties that card to being focussed on that creature.
  4. Transferring cards when a creature dies is optional ("you may..."). If you choose not to, then the focus cards remain removed from the game (they don't go into a graveyard).
  5. There is the possibility of having focus cards from your opponent on your own creature, or a mix of both your cards and the opponent's. In cases of multiple ownership, keep the focus cards face-down in seperate piles, remembering who owns what.
  6. ALL of my invented creatures in the draft have Focus, as this keyword needs a certain critical mass to be playable. Feel free to invent some of your own.
