This set introduced several new concepts into the game:

• the colour purple which spends money (called crowns) instead of mana,
• buildings as a new kind of permanent, in which creatures may be enclosed,
• male and female cards,
• victory points as a new winning condition,
• face up cards in libraries and face down cards in graveyards,
• a new combat ability called initiative which allow a creature to damage a different blocker,
• and a whole lot of references to games like Dungeons and Dragons, Ultima, Settlers of Catan and more.
